Robert Bresson, Definitely

March 03 - April 29, 2012

Ten films by master French filmmaker Robert Bresson will show between March 3 and April 29 at the Cleveland Institute of Art Cinematheque, 11141 East Boulevard in University Circle. The series, entitled “Robert Bresson, Definitely,” includes six newly struck 35mm prints and a few prints from Europe.

Robert Bresson (1901-1999) is one of the most revered moviemakers in the history of the medium. A minimalist known for his unmistakable, pared-down style (spare images with little dialogue wedded to carefully selected sound effects and music), Bresson tells tales of troubled protagonists in the midst of existential or spiritual crises. But as a Catholic, he frequently allows his characters to find inner peace, deliverance, or redemption. The name of the series plays off the title of Bresson’s little-known, next-to-last feature THE DEVIL, PROBABLY (1977), which opens the Cinematheque retrospective.
